Junior English—American Literature
2015 - 2016
Welcome to English class! I’m excited to have you this year. Junior English—American Literature explores American literature from the Puritan period through the 21st century. The curriculum goes hand in hand with the U.S. History I curriculum. The skills you will develop in Junior English—American Literature are universal and will help you attain success in all aspects of your life that involve reading, writing, speaking, viewing, and listening.
What I Expect of You
Classroom Expectations
The primary goal of this classroom is to create a positive learning community that encourages each individual to reach his or her potential. Therefore:
ü BE ACTIVE: Think, question, challenge! Your active participation is critical.
ü BE RESPECTFUL: Apply this rule to your language, attitude, and behavior.
ü BE ON TIME: Every minute counts.
ü BE PREPARED: Bring your homework, materials, and text to class every day.
ü BE STUDIOUS: Read and study regularly.
***Please note that school policies are in effect at all times.***
In order to learn and participate in class, you must have the following materials every day:
  • Our current text
  • A homework planner
    • When you come into class, sit in your seat and copy down the night’s homework, which will be posted on the board daily.
  • A notebook and folder OR a binder/section of a binder used solely for English
    • I distribute handouts frequently, and you should store them all in a place that’s easily accessible. Organization is one of the major keys to your success!
  • A writing implement
    • Pen or pencil is fine.
  • An active school computer account login
    • We will occasionally spend time working in the computer lab. If you can’t log into a computer to work, your participation grade will be negatively affected. The principal’s office will be happy to help you with this if you need it.
The success of this class depends on how well you prepare for each time we meet. As such, you will be held accountable to the course material through homework assignments or pop quizzes. Homework may be spot-checked or collected for a grade.
You are expected to participate actively and appropriately every day. Class activities may include, but are not limited to: in-class writing, group discussions, lecture/direct instruction, reading together, projects, research, oral presentations, and independent reading.
  • Be on time for class. Please refer to the Tiger Q for disciplinary action regarding tardiness.
  • You need to stay in the room during class. Each request to leave the room during class (e.g., to use the bathroom or go to the nurse) subtracts one extra credit point from your record. If you continue to leave the classroom after you’ve used all five chances, one point will be deducted from your marking period participation grade for each time you leave. In summary: 1) stay in class and be rewarded, 2) leave no more than five times and receive no penalty, and 3) leave more than five times and lose points on your participation grade. If you need to leave class, it should only be in the event of an emergency.
  • Cell phones, iPods, headphones, and other such devices should be silent and invisible in class. Expect a consequence if you don’t follow this rule.
  • If you are absent, check the classroom website for homework. For anything else you may have missed, like notes taken in class, check with a peer. I recommend you have the contact information for at least two of your classmates.
  • The number of days you are absent is the number of days you have to make up any missed work. You are responsible for making up work you have missed. Do not expect a reminder from me to complete missed work.
Academic Integrity
Plagiarism is theft and will not be tolerated. I expect that you will complete all of your assignments—both in and out of class—honestly and with integrity. Know what plagiarism is and how to avoid it. The consequences of plagiarism at THS are severe and have the potential to damage to your academic career. Please refer to the Tiger Q for definitions and disciplinary procedures.
  • Your grade will be calculated according to the following percentages:
    • Essays/Tests/Projects: 55%
    • Quizzes: 20%
    • Homework: 15%
    • Participation: 10%
  • Late assignments: An assignment is late if you don’t hand it in when I collect it (this is why it’s important to keep your work organized so you can easily access it when you need to). Homework up to one day late will receive half credit; otherwise, it becomes a zero.
  • Illegible assignments will lose points. If you have messy penmanship, I recommend that you type your assignments while you work on improving your handwriting.
  • English Department late policy: Late papers and other major assignments will be accepted with a loss of five percentage points per calendar day (for example, if a paper is scored 95% but was handed in a day late, it becomes 90%, and so on).
What You Can Expect of Me
  • Just as I expect you to be prepared every time we meet, you can expect the same of me. I am dedicated to facilitating an interactive and thought-provoking classroom. This will be a safe and open environment where all ideas are respected—as well as challenged and developed.
  • I am available before, during, and after school. Please don’t hesitate to see me if you would like extra help.
Junior Summer Reading 2014
Dear students,
Welcome to the start of your junior year. You should have completed your summer reading assignment by now. You will be expected to bring your copy of Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye" with you to class starting next Wednesday the 10th. You will bring your novel of the immigrant experience with you to class starting Wednesday the 17th. We will begin by exploring the Salinger's novel in depth and then moving on the following week to the novel of the immigrant experience. You will have two major assessments on each book, so have a thorough knowledge of each.
